National Museum of the Marine Corps – Phase II

Description

A gem of a project, Phase II work consisted of enclosing the full circular portion of the existing building by adding approximately 65,000 SF of slab on grade and slab on metal deck. The details involved interior structural walls, measuring 45’ tall, on massive mat foundations as well as 35’ tall radial exterior walls to complete the circular design of the structure. The biggest hurdles to overcome when completing the project was the size of the walls involved, the radial design of the building, and the aggressive schedule to complete the concrete work through the winter months. The first walls poured were the two major interior shear walls measuring 45’ tall. The radial design of the building meant all interior aspects of the project were laid out ahead of time and coordinated fully with all trades. Due to the harsh weather the walls had to be tented and heated to make sure they were not adversely affected.
